Eradicating Roaches through Nuclear Bomb - Possible or Not?
Cockroaches are insects of the order Blattodea that dates back to some 320 million years ago. They are popularly depicted as dirty pests although a great majority of the species is inoffensive and live in a wide range of habitats all over the world. Cockroaches can survive in the tropics and subtropics as well as the extremely cold temperature in the Arctic. Majority of the cockroach species are resilient and fast-breeding. Different chemicals are suggested to control cockroaches without evidence of effectiveness.
Cockroaches have an advantage over most animals when it comes to nuclear annihilation. They are remarkably tolerant of radiation. If you want to kill an American cockroach through radiation, it will take 67,500 rems (unit of radiation dosage) to do the job. Exposure to just 800 rems is deadly for humans. German cockroaches are more resistant to radiation requiring between 90,000 and 105,000 rems to see them die. The amount of radiation that cockroaches can tolerate is within the range of a thermonuclear explosion. The center of a nuclear bomb explosion is well over 10 million degrees Celsius. At 50 meters away from the blast, the temperature could reach 10,000 degrees Celsius instantly. The heat is enough to kill a cockroach. The natural conclusion is cockroaches will take over and thrive after all humans are gone after a nuclear war.
