CPD Bytes - Overcoming the Effects of Dyslexia through Awareness

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that causes problems with writing, reading and spelling. However, unlike learning disabilities, dyslexia does not affect intelligence. Dyslexia can be a lifelong problem that can present challenges on a daily basis but with support available to improve reading and writing skills, those with problems can be successful at school and at work. It is estimated that up to 1 in every 10 to 20 people in the United Kingdom has some degree of dyslexia. Approximately 15% of people have dyslexia. Most people do not know they are dyslexic. Dyslexia occurs in people of all backgrounds. Dyslexia is found in speakers of every language and country but rates vary. Men and women are equally likely to have dyslexia. Approximately 25% of children with ADHD also have dyslexia.

With appropriate teaching methods and motivation, dyslexics can successfully learn anything. Assistive technology is opening all kinds of doors to literacy and learning. Audio books and text to speech applications are two of the most important accessibility tools. Dyslexics excel at connecting ideas, thinking out of the box, 3D mapping and seeing the “big picture”. People with dyslexia often find success in the fields of art, computer science, design, drama, electronics, math, mechanics, music, physics, sales and sports.
